The hiring process has undergone a significant change since the launch of OpenAI’s language model, ChatGPT. According to a recent survey by ResumeBuilder, 61% of hiring managers reported an increase in qualified applications since the introduction of ChatGPT. The survey explored the perspectives of hiring managers on the use of AI-generated materials by job applicants and the impact of ChatGPT on the quality of application materials.

ChatGPT Improving Resume Quality

Stacie Haller, Chief Career Advisor at ResumeBuilder, noted that better-written resumes help candidates highlight their abilities, which has contributed to the increase in high-quality applications. She emphasized the importance of staying current with technology for candidates in an evolving job market. The report showed that 71% of respondents rated the quality of application materials written by ChatGPT as high or very high quality.

Perceived Impact of ChatGPT on Candidate Qualification

Interestingly, 63% of respondents believed that candidates who used ChatGPT-generated materials appeared more qualified than those who did not use the AI tool. However, a previous ResumeBuilder.com survey from February 2023 showed that only 46% of job seekers use ChatGPT to write their resumes and cover letters. This discrepancy suggests that hiring managers may be overestimating the use of ChatGPT among job applicants.

Hiring Managers’ Usage and Perception of ChatGPT

The report also found that 85% of hiring managers somewhat or often use ChatGPT to write job descriptions, and 85% use the AI platform to correspond with job applicants. Despite their usage of ChatGPT, 28% of hiring managers still somewhat or strongly agree that using the AI tool is cheating, and 27% would be somewhat or very likely to reject a candidate who used ChatGPT.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of ChatGPT has led to a notable increase in the number of qualified applications, as well as an improvement in the quality of application materials. The AI tool has become a valuable resource for both job seekers and hiring managers. However, the survey results reveal differing opinions on the use of AI-generated materials in the hiring process, with some hiring managers still considering it cheating.

As technology continues to evolve, it’s crucial for both job seekers and hiring managers to stay up-to-date with the latest tools and adapt to new ways of working. As ChatGPT’s impact on the hiring process becomes more evident, it’s essential for all parties to consider the potential benefits and ethical implications of using AI-generated materials in their professional endeavors.
